This comment is from my own blog! I’m using the plugin as the main driver of federation, with the other main IndieWeb plugins (webmention, syndication links, post kinds, etc) to fill in the gaps to bring back comments from elsewhere, incl. Mastodon, and to reply to posts/toots. The Friends plugin acts as a feed function and a way to add people, though it’s not perfect and it doesn’t work for discovery of new content.

With all of these, I’ve been able to implement lightweight federation, though there is room for improvement.

A few observations regarding the plugin:

1) It’d be nice if certain posts could be prevented from being widely distributed. For example, a reply distributed to another blog or Twitter doesn’t make sense to post to Mastodon/Fediverse since the quoted source itself isn’t included.

2) It needs a few more options for how posts are formatted. I don’t think it makes sense to include a link back to the source on simple statuses, though it does make sense for articles.

3) Now that the Friends plugin can send a follow request to an added subscription, it’d be great to have a list of follows as well.

Question to users. I'm trying to use my own site to post here/on the . However, by default the plugin generates a link to the origin post alongside the content. I'm thinking of some ways around this that would also still easily allow posting long-form articles but until then…

Would you consider links to the origin (not an in-context reference) in a regular status post or reply to be spammy?

With today's upgrade of the WordPress and plugins, two-way following is now possible between WP and accounts. I'm going to be slowly moving my activity to the blog account, which you can find here on Mastodon at @mikewmerritt@dymersion.com. I'll keep this account open for now and will be boosting here as I remember to do so.

The developer would like to implement the redirect functionality of ActivityPub, so at some point I hope to formally migrate this account.

I mentioned last week that I’ve installed the SemPress theme to take advantage of IndieWeb features like microformat labeling to enable parsing in webmentions, a kind of new-era trackback but better. Well, it’s more than just that. As I’m sure most people reading this are aware, there’s been a lot of activity in the world of social media in the past month or so. A new owner at Twitter, people moving to different platforms, and Elon Musk having a bit of a meltdown. All of this has gotten me thinking about the future of my own online presence and has encouraged me to look into revving this blog back up and using it as a hub for my own content of all types.
